World Series, Singapore on 17 February 2025
Singapore’s venture capital (VC) landscape reflects a blend of resilience and strategic evolution, aligning with both regional developments and global investment trends.
Investment Activity and Economic Collaborations
In the first nine months of 2024, Singapore-based firms secured approximately US$4.05 billion across 369 deals, a slight decrease from US$4.3 billion and 410 deals during the same period in 2023. Despite this dip, Singapore maintained its leadership within the ASEAN region, accounting for 58% of deal volume and 68% of deal value.
A significant development influencing the VC environment is the collaboration between Singapore and Malaysia in establishing a special economic zone (SEZ) in Johor. This initiative aims to attract substantial investments in sectors such as artificial intelligence, technology manufacturing, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals. By leveraging Singapore’s capital and technological expertise alongside Johor’s resources, the SEZ is poised to create approximately 20,000 jobs and host 50 projects within five years.
Sectoral Focus and Government Initiatives
The Singaporean government continues to prioritize deep tech sectors, including artificial intelligence and climate technology. In October 2024, an additional S$440 million was allocated to the Startup SG Equity scheme, increasing the total government funding under this initiative to over S$1 billion. This move underscores a commitment to fostering innovation and supporting startups with high growth potential.
Moreover, the establishment of the Global Finance and Technology Network, led by former central banker Ravi Menon, aims to promote global fintech innovation. This non-profit organization focuses on creating economic value, expanding opportunities, and building resilient financial systems, further solidifying Singapore’s position as a fintech hub.
Global Trends Influencing Local Dynamics
Globally, venture capital trends in 2025 highlight a cautious yet optimistic investment approach. Key areas attracting significant attention include artificial intelligence, fintech, and climate tech. Investors are increasingly focusing on startups that demonstrate clear, scalable value propositions, with a heightened emphasis on profitability and sustainable growth. This global perspective aligns with Singapore’s strategic initiatives and sectoral focus, indicating a synergistic relationship between local and international investment landscapes.
