Venture capital (VC) is a type of private equity that provides capital to start-up and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with high growth potential in exchange for an ownership stake in the company. In recent years, London has become a hub for venture capital activity in the United Kingdom, with many VC firms choosing to base themselves in the city.

One of the main reasons for London’s popularity as a VC hub is the city’s diverse and vibrant start-up ecosystem. London is home to a range of accelerators, incubators, and co-working spaces that support the growth of early-stage companies. The city is also home to a number of world-class universities, which produce a steady stream of highly skilled and innovative entrepreneurs.

Another factor that has contributed to the growth of venture capital in London is the availability of government support and funding. The UK government has implemented a number of initiatives to encourage the growth of the start-up sector, including tax breaks for VC investors and grants for early-stage companies.

There are many VC firms operating in London, ranging from large, established firms with a global presence to smaller, more specialized firms. Some of the most active VC firms in the city include Seedrs, Atomico, and LocalGlobe. These firms typically focus on investing in technology and digital media start-ups, but also invest in other sectors such as healthtech, fintech, and foodtech.

In recent years, London has seen a number of successful exits by companies that have received venture capital funding. These include Skyscanner, which was acquired by Chinese travel giant Ctrip in 2016 for £1.4 billion, and Monzo, a digital bank that recently reached a valuation of over £2 billion.

Overall, London’s thriving start-up ecosystem and availability of government support and funding have made it a popular destination for venture capital investment in the UK. With a diverse range of VC firms operating in the city, and a track record of successful exits, London is well positioned to continue to be a major player in the global venture capital landscape.

Institute of Physics
Venture capital impact project
Developing relationships with VC investors. In doing so, we will better understand:

How funds are raised and capital is deployed into physics deep tech and how it differs from other science-related sectors;
the barriers and enablers to investing in different sectors and the influence of the sector on overall fund performance; and
the opportunities to increase the attractiveness of physics deep tech to UK investors.

The project will investigate potential advocacy positions with recommendations that will provide a starting point for addressing the issues that are holding back investment into physics. These recommendations will be included in a report launched towards the end of 2024.
