World Series, Florianópolis on 19 May 2026

The venture capital (VC) landscape in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, and southern Brazil continues to evolve in 2026, shaped by Brazil’s macroeconomic stabilisation, accelerating digital transformation, and the growing international relevance of the country’s innovation ecosystem.

Investment Focus Areas

In 2026, Florianópolis-based and Santa Catarina–focused venture capital firms are strongly oriented toward software, technology-enabled services, and innovation-driven SMEs, reflecting the region’s reputation as one of Brazil’s leading start-up hubs. Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded across multiple sectors, with investors prioritising applied AI, SaaS platforms, automation, data analytics, and digital solutions that enhance productivity, customer engagement, and operational efficiency.

Core investment areas include SaaS and enterprise software, fintech and payments, marketplaces, healthtech, edtech, agritech, and smart manufacturing solutions. The region’s strong base of technology companies, combined with a growing number of digitally mature SMEs, continues to drive demand for scalable B2B and B2B2C platforms with clear unit economics and potential for national and international expansion.

Florianópolis also plays an important role in Brazil’s broader digital and innovation economy. Operating within Brazil’s regulatory frameworks—particularly those overseen by the Central Bank of Brazil and the National Data Protection Authority (LGPD)—investors favour compliant fintech infrastructure, embedded finance, digital payments, open finance solutions, and data-secure platforms. While speculative consumer technology models face increased scrutiny, capital is increasingly directed toward revenue-generating businesses with strong governance and defensible market positions.

Capital Deployment and Fundraising

After several years of capital discipline across Latin America, Brazilian and regional VC funds entered 2026 with more selective but gradually improving deployment activity. Capital raised in earlier fund cycles is being deployed into high-conviction opportunities, particularly companies originating in Santa Catarina with proven traction, resilient business models, and the ability to scale across Brazil and into other Latin American markets.

Deal flow has stabilised, with fewer but higher-quality transactions and a renewed focus on Seed, Series A, and selective Series B rounds for start-ups demonstrating sustainable growth, strong gross margins, and disciplined capital management. New fund formation continues, particularly among early-stage and sector-focused funds, alongside growing participation from corporate venture arms, family offices, and strategic investors with roots in southern Brazil.

Public and quasi-public capital remains an important pillar of the ecosystem. Institutions such as BNDES, FINEP, regional development agencies, and state-level innovation programmes in Santa Catarina play a key role at early stages, often catalysing private investment. Accelerators, incubators, venture studios, and university-linked innovation hubs—most notably those connected to UFSC and the broader ACATE network—continue to support founder development, product validation, and market access.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite positive momentum, structural challenges persist. Early-stage start-ups often face limited access to large domestic follow-on capital, leading many founders to seek international investors earlier in their lifecycle. Regulatory complexity, tax burden, and macroeconomic volatility can extend go-to-market timelines and increase operating costs, particularly for fintech and highly regulated sectors. Competition for experienced engineers, product leaders, and AI talent remains strong, though costs remain more competitive than in São Paulo.

At the same time, Florianópolis offers distinctive advantages through its dense concentration of technology talent, collaborative start-up culture, and high quality of life, which continues to attract founders and skilled professionals from across Brazil. Strong university–industry linkages, applied research capabilities, and a history of successful technology exits contribute to a steady pipeline of new ventures and spin-outs. The region’s growing connectivity to national and international investor networks further enhances its attractiveness.

Ecosystem Maturity

By 2026, Florianópolis has consolidated its position as one of Brazil’s most mature and resilient technology ecosystems. A growing cohort of repeat founders, operators, and former executives from successful Brazilian scale-ups are building companies with disciplined execution, capital efficiency, and global ambition.

This experienced founder base, combined with active local investors, public support mechanisms, and increasing access to international capital, continues to attract attention from both Latin American and global venture funds. The resulting ecosystem is characterised by pragmatic innovation, strong community collaboration, and long-term value creation.

Overall, Florianópolis’s venture capital environment in 2026 is defined by cautious optimism. Continued momentum in SaaS, applied AI, fintech infrastructure, and technology-enabled services—supported by a strong talent base, active public–private collaboration, and increasing global integration—creates meaningful opportunity. Strengthening access to later-stage capital, simplifying regulatory and tax frameworks, and enabling efficient international scale-up will be central to sustaining Florianópolis’s role as a leading innovation and venture capital hub in Brazil.
