World Series, Barcelona on 24 April 2025
Barcelona’s venture capital (VC) landscape is experiencing significant growth and diversification, solidifying its position as a leading startup hub in Southern Europe. The city is home to approximately 1,900 startups, reflecting an 11% increase from 2020 and a 26.4% rise compared to 2019.
This growth trajectory underscores Barcelona’s expanding influence in the European startup ecosystem.
Prominent VC Firms in Barcelona
Several key VC firms are instrumental in driving this momentum:
– Caixa Capital Risc: As the multi-stage VC arm of CriteriaCaixa, this firm invests in innovative, fast-growing companies across Europe.
– ICF Capital: A management company that invests in Catalan companies from seed to private equity stages.
– Nina Capital: Focused on health tech, Nina Capital invests in need-driven founders building companies with international ambitions.
– Banco Sabadell: Through its BStartup initiative, Banco Sabadell has invested in 96 startups and recently launched a new hub dedicated to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The bank plans to open another hub in Barcelona in 2025, aiming to support over 1,400 companies with services and resources tailored for startups and scaleups.
Sectoral Investment Trends
In 2024, Decelera Ventures invested €5 million in 14 startups, focusing on sectors such as fintech, health, ESG, energy, and cybersecurity. The firm is actively seeking new projects for 2025 and has opened applications for its tenth edition of the Decelera Menorca program, targeting early-stage startups with innovative models and committed founders.
Additionally, the European Investment Bank (EIB), through the European Tech Champions Initiative (ETCI), has invested in Spanish startups like Inke, specializing in respiratory therapies, and Factorial, a developer of human resources software. Since its launch in 2023, ETCI has mobilized €10 billion for growing tech companies across Europe, with Spain increasing its participation by contributing an additional €300 million.
Emerging Investment Sources
Family offices in Spain are diversifying their traditional real estate investments into technology, consulting, and advertising sectors. A PwC report indicates that one in four startups in Spain is financed through a family office, highlighting a shift towards more dynamic and potentially higher-yielding sectors.
